Anuradhapura was established by King Pandukabhaya in 377 BCE and became a center of political, religious, and cultural significance in ancient Sri Lanka. It was a thriving capital and a major hub of trade and Buddhist pilgrimage, attracting devotees from all over the world. The city is home to many architectural marvels, including enormous dagobas (stupas), ancient monasteries, palaces, and beautifully carved stone sculptures.

The most iconic landmark in Anuradhapura is the Ruwanwelisaya stupa, which stands at a height of 103 meters (338 feet) and is one of the largest stupas in Sri Lanka. Another notable stupa is the Jetavanaramaya, which was once the tallest stupa in the world.

Anuradhapura is also famous for its sacred Bo tree, known as Sri Maha Bodhi. It is believed to be a sapling from the original Bodhi tree in India under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. The Sri Maha Bodhi is considered the oldest documented tree in the world and holds immense religious significance for Buddhists around the globe. I

n addition to its religious and historical importance, Anuradhapura boasts several ancient reservoirs, or tanks, that were built to irrigate the city's agricultural lands. The most notable of these is the enormous Abhayavapi (Tissa Wewa) tank, which covers an area of over 200 hectares (500 acres). Anuradhapura was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, recognizing its outstanding universal value and contribution to world civilization. The ancient city attracts tourists and pilgrims alike who come to explore its ruins, experience its spiritual atmosphere, and marvel at its ancient architectural wonders.

Today, Anuradhapura is a vibrant city that blends its rich historical past with modern developments. It continues to be an important center for Buddhism in Sri Lanka, and the ancient traditions and rituals associated with the city are still practiced during religious festivals and ceremonies.
