The official currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). It's important to familiarize yourself with current exchange rates before your trip. It's advisable to exchange a small amount upon arrival for immediate expenses and then seek better rates in town.

Cash is widely used throughout the country, making it essential to carry some on hand. ATMs are available in urban areas and major tourist destinations for cash withdrawals in local currency. Be aware that some ATMs may charge fees, and not all accept international cards, so it's wise to inform your bank of your travel plans.

Credit cards, especially Visa and MasterCard, are commonly accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, but many smaller vendors and rural areas may only accept cash. Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; a small gesture, like rounding up the bill, is often considered courteous.
